I have a Winchester 04 short, long, extra long single shot .22. It has the steel crescent butt plate and the proof mark of a W in a circle on both the barrel and bolt. From other messages I believe that this firearm was manufactured between 1919 and 1925.
I do have two questions, on both sides of the stock are bull’s-eye type targets and some rough checkering just behind the bolt on top of the pistol grip. Have you ever seen or heard both this type of stock?
Second questions is the barrel is a smooth bore. Have you any information on this type of barrel?
Jerome,
If it is marked Model “04”, and with a steel crescent butt plate, it was manufactured sometime between early 1919 and early 1923. The checkering on the stock and the bull’s eye are not factory original. To the best of my knowledge, all Model 04 rifles were made with a rifled barrel (no smooth bores).

Check under the bbl. with it removed from the stock. Their should be a date underneath. Not exactly when the gun was made, but when the bbl. was made. Sometimes they are a match. Big Larry
Bert, Thanks for the information, I thought that the checkering might have been done by a pervious owner but the bull eyes targets look professional. I will try to post some photo later.
Larry I removed the barrel from the stock and there are no numbers on it. Thanks for your reply.
Take care and thank-you.
