I have a Model 61 that my Father bought new in the early 50’s – Serial # 140179 ( Mfg. 1950 ) – from Ellwood Epps, Clinton Ontario.
The upper tang on this rifle is NOT drilled and tapped.
I’ve seen other posts on the site regarding 61’s that are D&T and others referencing Model 61 tang sights.
So, were the 61’s Factory D&T at one time (then discontinued) or was it an aftermarket gunsmith installation ?
Thx. Dave
David,
According to Ned Schwing’s book on the model 61 (Winchester Slide Actions Volume II), “When the model 61 was introduced in 1932, the upper tang was tapped with two holes for a tang sight. On June 4, 1942, Change of Manufacturing Order #14380 authorized the removal of these tapped holes. The result was now the upper tang was completely smooth”.

Al,
Thanks for the help.
I’ve tried to find a set of Ned Schwings’ Books on the Slide Action Rifles, but the Amazon Prices are Amazing…
Best regards… Dave

Hello David,
I have been working on research survey of the Model 61 rifles and one of the features I have kept track of is the upper tang and wether or not it is D&T for a peep sight. So far I have cataloged just slightly over 6,300 individual rifles in the effort. Based on my data I would put the change over point at approximately SN 68,500 and it is rather abrupt. I have found a few rifles in the 69,900 and early 70,000 range with drilled tangs but they are not consistent.
I assume the rifle you have is chambered for Short, Long, and Long Rifle?

Hi Michael – Yes that’s correct, S.L. and L.R.
