OfflineYes, I did understand your point and I confess once I obtained my rifle, warts and all, I quit following prices on the Sporting Rifles. It was easier as long as Steve Fjestad was alive and made the Blue Book useful.
Aside from the NIB or nearly so guns, I just haven’t seen any shooter grade 52C Sporting Rifles come up for sale. (Knowing the frailties of human nature as we do, perhaps there’s an unfortunate reason for the apparent absence.)
In any event, it is difficult for me to see whether an 80% B model brings less than an 80% C model, when there aren’t any of the latter in the visible marketplace.
I’ll take your word for it — what does an honest 80% C model bring these days?
I’ve seen some B and earlier models at DFW area shows in the last 50 years but the only C model I’ve ever held in my hands is the one I own. That is why I think of them as rare birds.
Perhaps they are on display at the national shows in Las Vegas or Oklahoma City, for example, which I’ve never attended.

OfflineParson,
To add to the visible trail of artifacts left by #99076C on its long, strange trip, here is the aftermarket plastic grip cap it wore when I bought it.
I was rooting through my parts locker yesterday and came across it.
What sort of “Prevert” ☆ would do such a thing?

so uncultured and low he would deface a valuable Pre-64 Winchester with cheap aftermarket parts to satisfy his tasteless cosmetic instincts.
You may recall Colonel “Bat” Guano, portrayed by the late Keenan Wynn in the film, Dr. Strangelove, accused Group Captain Mandrake (Peter Sellers) of being a “deviated prevert” who had killed the base commander, General Ripper, when Ripper “discovered his preversions.”

OfflineZeb,
The same kind of “prevert” who would drill eleven holes in the barrel of a Winchester 52 Sporting rifle.
I would think that if a moron hasn’t accomplished his purpose in the first few holes, he might have stopped drilling. “If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop digging” said Will Rogers. That wisdom sailed right past these “preverts.” Some people should have their hands severed at the wrists, for the good of us all. (This conversation piece is retained in my man cave as an object lesson on how not to behave, along with a few other not so holy relics of human stupidity.)
I have given up even trying to understand what foolishness people get up to while messing up their rifles. Nothing can be made foolproof, since fools are so ingenious.

Those photos make me want to take all my M52’s out of the safe and hug them.

All I can say is that apparently some folks have better parts lockers than others, some never throw anything away. As you know this little trinket is one reason you got a good deal on this rifle!
Back when cars were easier to tinker with it was often tempting to weld someone’s hood shut to keep an inept tinkerer from causing himself additional embarrassing and expensive repairs.
