OfflineIn a previous thread, I wrote about a Model 75 that I had acquired. It needed a bit of love – it was missing the front sight and a magazine, the butt plate was ill fitting, and the stock needed to be refinished. All those issues were addressed, and I was finally able to take it for a spin yesterday.
Using a standard NRA 50 yard smallbore target, I fired five groups of five, using different ammo – Lapua Center-X, Federal Gold Medal Target, Wolf Match Target, CCI Standard Target, and Federal Auto Match.
The results were surprising…… seems like the rifle much preferred the cheaper stuff, Wolf and Federal Auto Match, to the spendy stuff. Especially surprising was the dismal performance of the Lapua. The best group was obtained with the Wolf, followed closely by the bulk-packed and cheap Auto Match:

OfflineThat Federal Automatch is a steal IMO. Very few duds, pretty good accuracy, cycles all my semi-autos, and is cheap. WIN WIN WIN WIN
Scheels has it for 19.99/box 325. Cabela’s will price match it and give another $1 off for club members. It’s my favorite stockpile ammo.
The CCI stuff in any flavor also does well for me. I’ve yet to try some $$$ “match” ammo, maybe it will be awesome!

I also shoot in a Bullseye league, with a lowly Browning Buckmark. I routinely shoot 98 – 100 with it, using Federal Auto Match.

OfflineGreat range report, rifle turned out great! I hear good stuff about the Wolf and Auto Match, as soon as I shoot up this Norma stuff I need to give it a try! I understand about your Buckmark “match gun”. I shot a monthly plate match and occasional BE matches with a Ruger Mark ! target and issue sights against some pretty fancy rigs and optics quite awhile back. For the plate matches I did well when I shot only as fast as I could hit. We could only use irons in BE in those days. In those days Winchester Wildcat was better ammo but this Ruger thought it was match ammo!

Mike, speaking of range reports…… what about your 670? Any updates?
Thunderstorms yesterday, last range trips mostly confirming earlier results. The 670 in 35 Whelen really likes the 200gr RB Hornady bullet and I’m closing in on what El Diablito Rojo (Zeb’s name for the 30-06 project rifle) likes. Had a great day at the loading bench and loading manuals, even found a bag of unidentified bullets that I couldn’t help but load into some cases I had prepped.
I love reloading but the preferences of a good 22 rifle fascinate me. I’m impressed you were able to unlock the code on your first trip but it appears you had some likely suspects queued up and did an excellent job getting them on paper! Good job!
