Ike,
I have no idea what they are referring to with their “(cut through the finish)” comment. The barrel marking looks perfectly normal to me.

I believe all octagon barreled Model 61 rifles were “single caliber” designated. I don’t have any information why, with the exception of the W.R.F. which needed a special carrier, that would not allow standard diameter .22 rifle cartridge to be used. Roger B.

Correct. I’ve often wondered why they took the time to manufacture single caliber 61’s, (all of the Octagons, and some of the round barrels). I suppose it was for individual twist rates for those chamberings to get the best accuracy. Still seems like quite an effort to make these caliber specific examples when the practice of the multi-chambered 22 S,L,LR rifles had been around since the Model 1906.
I have an Oct 61 in LR and another in WRF. The WRF has the marking on the lower front portion of the receiver, just like the 1890’s did. I suppose I need to find a good 22 Short Oct. 61 to finish the set (as they did not make a Long, as I recall).
