Roger,
I enjoyed chatting with you and looking at your rifles. I have your card and will give you a call when I get a chance.

Hey Jeff,
I jumped in to two more 22s!
Model 52B Standard barrel
ser. 66638 (I thought this was a good number)
Lyman 525 rear 17A front
Negative point: Has a triangle plastic inlay in front of mag. well, possibly for palm rest, not sure
Model 697
Hasn’t arrived yet.
Has incorrect scope, but I have a Win. scope (2.5X post and cross hair) that has been sitting for over 15 years.
Roger
Roger,
Both of those are great rifles but of course I am especially fond of the 697 which is a rare bird!
Check the base spacing on the 697 when you receive it as the spacing is different on the 697 with the 5x and 2 3/4x scopes.
If the rear base is mounted on the receiver ring and the base center to center distance is a little over 4″ then it is a G69760R and originally came with a 2 3/4x scope. If the CtC distance between the bases is a little over 6 1/2″ then it is G69750R and originally came with a 5x scope. The bases were placed closer together to accommodate the shorter length of the 2 3/4x scope. If both bases are located on the barrel then a different CtC distance was used which I will have to look up for you. If you use the incorrect Winchester scope power we geeky OCD collectors can tell the difference
Best Regards,
.

Jeff,
Thanks for the information, these little facts are hard to come by.
I just compared the front mount location in the pictures of my purchase with the 697 I had at Reno.
Both rear mounts are located on the receiver ring.
The one I had at Reno has the 4″ spacing and front block located above “STER” OF THE “WINCHESTER” barrel stamp.
The one I just purchased has the front mount located above the “MODEL 69” stamp which means it is further forward.
I guess the shorter spacing wasn’t noticed or brought to light at Reno.
Now we will just have to wait and see how this all this works out!
The 2.5X scope’s condition is no where near the condition of the 5X that you examined in Reno.
Best regards,
Roger

I hope both of you make it to Cody this summer. Maybe I need to make it to Reno this year, sounds like fun. Life (and a job) got in the way last year and I regret it. I’m at that stage where I still need a job but can afford to take off whenever I want. Someday I’ll figure out what that means and I’ll make more shows. I’ll be at the table with little or nothing to sell but eager to hear about your favorite guns.

Hi Roger,
Yes, to be honest I didn’t notice the base spacing when we were looking at your rifles in Reno Sorry about that, I would have mentioned it to you if I would have caught it then. The good news is that you now have BOTH catalogued models of the 697, The G69750R and the G69760R. Not many people can say that! You just need to find a nice condition 2 3/4x scope to match it.
Does your new 697 have the original bases on it? Those are REALLY hard to find on the loose since those bases were only used on the sightless models 69, 72 and 75 Sporter and both the sightless 72 and 75 Sporter are even more rare than the 697.
I hope to see you again down the road sometime.
Best Regards,
Jeff

I am planning on coming to Cody again this year. Also, I am trying to adjust my schedule to be at Tulsa in April as it is another of my favorite shows.
Hope to see you at one of them this year.

Jeff and All,
More questions are popping up!
I notice that the front rings on both of the 2.5X scopes are installed the reverse of the 5X.
The tightening screw is on the muzzle end on the 5X and reversed on the 2.5X scopes.
Is this correct?
I used a little Carnauba wax on the not so nice scope and it made a substantial improvement!
The gun that is coming has the correct mounts and blocks, but someone replaced the Win. scope with a 4X off brand scope. UGH!!!!
Thanks for your expertise,
Roger

Hi Roger,
Somehow I missed your recent question and apologize for the delay in responding. According to the Winchester drawings the head of the base tightening screw should be on the left side as looking down the barrel. This is the same for the 2 3/4x and 5x
. For the foreword mount that places the head of the scope tube tightening screw at the rear of the mount.
Many of these scopes have been taken apart and cleaned over the years and reassembled incorrectly but it is not really a big deal as the foreward mount works either way, it is just not technically correct. In fact, if you review the article by Vincent Rausch you will noticed some of his mounts are installed backwards also.
Again, I am only repeating what the factory drawings show and that is what I usually go by for assembly.
Now you just need to find the very elusive 697 with the 2 3/4x post scope (G69766R) which is the hardest to find. That will give you the trifecta hat trick of ALL the various Model 697’s.
Hope to see you down the road somewhere soon!

Jeff,
Just received the 697 and have checked it out.
There are no stamps on the bottom of the barrel under the wood, so no barrel date!
The take down screw is of the later design and counter sunk.
The receiver behind the bolt shows light patchy discoloration like a flaking has started.
The balance of the bluing only has a few light scratches and handling marks.
The wood only shows light handling marks and like the barrel near 90 to 95%.
The trigger guard and bolt handle show light fading, but the bolt shows only minimal wear.
I removed the improper scope and have replaced it with a proper 5x Winchester scope (tightening screw towards the rear).
I have zeroed the post and cross hair with my sighting laser.
Hope to give it a test firing Mon., depending on the weather.
Roger
