The scope looks like a Mossberg 2 3/4 Power with a No. 9 mount, like this one:

The rifle has a finger groove stock, similar to the front of a Win Model 67, but there also appears to be some bottom metal (for a magazine?) and the comb on the stock doesn’t look quite right.

There’s a protrusion on the underside about the right size for a .22 mag, but seems too far forward of the guard to be that.  But still think it’s a .22 of some make.

But you nailed that “sniper scope”!  Maybe USMC collectors will drive up the prices of them the way they have Win A5s.

Steve, look at that projection at the rear end of the bolt; the M 65 doesn’t have it.  What is it?  I don’t know.

That part off the back looks like some type of eye cup mounted on the rear of the receiver, looks like it pivots up for some type of receiver sight. If you didnt have / want the scope. I’m going back to my pick.

It looks similar to a Mossberg 42 bolt action repeater (1935-1937) but the photo is not real clear.

And, a REAL Marine Rifleman would have a sling on it.

Interesting photo, thanks for posting.

Best Regards,

That would be consonant with the scope. Just looked at the variety of Mossberg BAs in Gun Trader Guide–wow!

I’d cut that Gyrene some slack re the sling, since he took the trouble to strap on a 1911.  (For administering the coup de gras.)
