OfflineWay deep in the back of my safe, I brought out my Model 90 .22 short. Ser. # 6578xx with an A underneath the Ser # on the receiver.
Can someone tell me the significance of that? Family story is that my Grandfather bought it from the shooting gallery for $5
It is a takedown model with an octagon barrel. Any other info about it would be appreciated.

OnlineThe “A” simply identifies it as a Model 1890 receiver frame versus a “B” marked Model 1906 receiver frame. It was for internal Winchester assembly purposes.
We highly encourage complete serial numbers be posted. The partial serial number you mention indicates that it was manufactured sometime in early 1920.

OfflineIf it was a “gallery gun” it would have the triangular loading port under the magazine, and with any luck at all it would have the octagon tether band on the barrel .
