Picked up a pretty nice Model 69A that features a crome firing pin cap, blue bolt handle, and a groove receiver.  Was thinking that it was made in 1956 or maybe 1957?

JWA will be along soon to tell you when your rifle was made. I have one similar with all the chrome and grooved receiver. Nicest M69A I own. It once had a Baby Redfield scope on it, but I took the scope off, and gave it away. It is a keeper. Big Larry

Hi Bo,

While in general, your rifle could have been made between mid-1954 to late 1957, I suspect your particular rifle was made between late-1954 and early 1955.  The reason is that there was a shortage of blued Breech Bolt Plugs during that 5-6 month period and Winchester continued production using chromed Breech Bolt Plugs which were manufactured for the Model 47 and were identical except for the finish.

This occurred on both the Model 69 and the 75 Target and 75 Sporting during that specific time period.  No other bolt components were chromed, just the Breech Bolt Plug.  By mid-1955 Winchester had reverted back to the standard blued Breech Bolt Plugs on the 69 and 75 and then in late 1957/early 1958 Winchester changed to all chrome bolt trimmings and handle on the Model 69.

Your rifle may or may not have a 2-digit year date stamped on the underside of the barrel in front of the receiver.

JWA, Thank you for the interesting information.  I ordered your book on the Model 69.  Looking forward to learning more on the Model 69.  Are you going to the OGCA show this weekend?  Or perhaps the WACO/OGCA show in September?  I talked to Wayne Miller.  He won’t be at the show this weekend, but I’m hoping that he can make the September show.

Hi Bo,

I saw your book order – thanks!  I am out of town until Friday night but will get it signed and shipped to you Priority Mail on Saturday, sorry for the delay.

I have the September OGCA show on my calendar to go but I won’t know if I can get the time off work until the last minute as I am working in Barcelona the week prior so I would have to fly from there to OH.

Best Regards,
