I recently bought a 1937 Model 62 with a crescent rifle butt.  I’m trying to determine if it may have been a special order.  The rifle looks like an 1890 with a round barrel.  I talked with the Cody folks and found out Winchester had a final 1890 push from 1937-1940 to finish out the remaining parts. Has anyone ever come across this variation or did I buy a frankenstein?  All said it is great to take out to the desert plinking.

Sure sounds like a M62 w/ an 1890 stock. What is the serial number?

Yes it does. I’m trying to determine if it’s a factory option in 1937. SN is 59553A. A is only on the reciever. Tang is matching number no A. Cody said to look under metal butt plate for 3-4 fitters numbers stamped on stock. No luck. only mark on stock is a black 1/4 wide line side to side midway up the stock. Has anyone else found a similar set up? Were you able to find out if it was factory?  On a side note just received a take down case from LL Bean which is like a custom fit for the 62. 28″ waxed finish well padded leather trimming looks great. I was after a small size to take up less room in the RV. This is perfect and their price was very fair, plus no shipping charge.

Dennis can you post up some pictures of your rifle that show the markings including those on the upper and lower tangs, bolt, etc, or, explain each area in detail?  If you do, some folks here might be able to help you with your questions.

That’s what it sounds like.  The barrel date would be interesting to know as well.

Once I figure out how to add pictures I’ll post some.
