I have a model 61 with an X at the end of the serial number. I’ve been told they are extremely rare as the gun was stamped with the same serial number as the previous gun produced. They put the X at the end of the number to make it different. I’m trying to find some information on the value of an X gun as well as this rifle. Any help is appreciated.   Paul

Paul,

The “X” on the end of the serial number was used to identify a duplicate serial number. That stated, they are not particularly rare. I have been surveying many different Winchester Models for the past 15-years, and during that time, I have encountered more than (60) duplicate serial numbered Winchesters. For the Model 94 alone, I have surveyed nearly 4-dozen thus far, with one serial number having a double “XX”.

The value of your Model 61 rifle will primarily be determined by which variation it is, and its graded condition. The duplicate serial number marking will not add much (if any) value to the rifle.
