I recently inherited a Model 61 “WMR .22 SHOT” (markings located on the  top of the barrel) with what I believe is a Routledge Bore attached to the muzzle, with a stamp that reads “WMR MOD”. There is also an “A” stamped beneath the trigger pull below the serial number. Supposedly this firearm was a prototype model 61, but I’m not certain. My hope is that some of you on this message board would be able to shed some light on the firearm and the history behind it. I’ve searched high and low online for information but have come up empty handed. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Pictures added to post. Took me a few minutes to figure out how to add them, my apologies for not having them on the post originally.

Hey Eberg that is quite a find.  It appears you may have one of the experimental 22 W M R SHOT rifles produced back in the early 1960s.  On page 91 and 92 of Ned Schwing’s “WINCHESTER SLIDE-ACTION RIFLES” Volume II you will find information and pictures concerning these experimental rifles.  The muzzle attachment you mention is the ‘changeable’ choke, marked “M O D”.  Congratulations!!!  What a jewel.

Hello Eberg,

Your rifle was produced during 1962.  It is the fourth WMR Shot rifle that I have documented in my survey of the Model 61 rifles.  There is one about 500 SN’s earlier and then two rifles in the 319000 SN range produced in 1961.  One of the earlier ones sold at RIA in May of 2017 for $11,500!

Thanks so much Michael! I knew it was rare but had no idea how rare! Do you have an idea of how many total were made in this experimental model?

Again, thanks for your insight and knowledge and I will check out the link you sent as well. I definitely don’t plan on selling it but it’s nice to have a general idea of it’s worth.
