While looking on a few internet sales sites, I ran across this new in box model 61 deluxe from Steve Barnett.
I referred to Ned Schwings book on the Winchester Slide Action Rifles Volume II, and on page 77, and 78 he discusses the rarity of the model 61 with factory checkered stocks, and how difficult it is to validate it as factory original.
I’m interested in learning more about the various model 61 configurations, so for conversation sake. How can you tell if it’s factory original??
Thanks,
Al

I can believe it–standard factory checkering (disregarding extra-fancy special order work) is well within the technical ability of most any professional checkering artist; all they need to know is the proper factory pattern, and maybe some trick for giving the new work the appearance of a little age.

Al,
I would be very leary of such a gun. Evidently, there are a lot of fakes out there with fake boxes, phony/forged work orders, etc. I’ve attached an old forum thread that you should read. It’s stuff like this that absolutely kills any real legitimate NIB guns. That’s why I steer clear of anything “new in box” or anything claiming to be in “original box.”

Don,
Thanks for the response and posting the thread. As I said, I am trying to learn more about this particular variation. I’m not intending to buy the one I posted, just trying to learn more. Seems it would be an expensive lesson.

I have no fear at all of falling victim to such fakery–it’s one of the fringe benefits of poverty!
Though I wouldn’t mind learning if there’s a method, short of scientific analysis in a lab, of judging the originality of good checkering. Suspect there isn’t, beyond trusting one’s “gut feeling.”
Renegade,
I looked through this old post https://winchestercollector.org/forum/winchester-rifles/DELUXE+MODEL+61+WINCHESTERS/, and wonder if you or Paulene have anything to add to the discussion concerning the rifle I’m talking about.
Thanks,
Al
