I recently had an extremely high condition 06 follow me home. It’s a 1912 vintage rifle and all original but has sight upgrades.the bore is perfect and it doesn’t seem to have been shot much, the magazine tube is starting to show some patina other wise all metal is excellent.
My question is was Winchester exporting a lot of these little rifles back then ?

Thank you for ay information!

There are no record that can tell us how many Winchesters were exported to the U.K., but based on the number of them that turn up with British Proof marks, it was a fair number.  J.S. Kerr was the major importer of Winchester firearms.

Years ago, I acquired a collection of approximately 125 Winchester rifles, in the .22 caliber, as several different models were in this collection.

There were also several with the British proof marks on them, in the early slide action rifles as I recall, the M-1890, M-1906, and a few others.

Interesting as it was, there wasn’t a lot of information about, back then, and I held onto most of them for awhile, but have moved many in trade deals, or part with some that friends had to have!

That’s one of the nicest 1906’s I’ve seen.  The British proofs just add to the “cool” factor in my opinion.  Coincidentally, I found this rifle on GI this morning and thought it looked familiar.  I think you did very well on the price.

And spendy!!  It would sure make a nice companion displayed next to your  British-proofed 1906!

Beautiful, but the proof marks aren’t british, but Belgian.

They show this gun was specifically imported in Belgium and proofed in Liège (which was mandatory for any guns imported in Belgium, and all belgian guns).

Free bird,

thank you for that information! I guess I just assumed they were British.

I always thought it interesting that . . .

For an inexpensive gun, it has ENGRAVED screw heads on the two buttplate screws!
