Thought this might be of interest to some of the new rimfire enthusiast as a quick reference for Model 1890/90.

  • 1890: The Winchester Model 1890 pump-slide action .22 rimfire rifle is introduced in 22 short, long, and the .22 Winchester Rim Fire(22 WRF) cartridge. Case color receivers.

  • 1892: 2nd model variation introduced and a takedown feature is added.

    •  1901: 2nd model gets blued receivers. Winchester discontinued case color finishing on the receiver frames (s/n 111970). Triggers, trigger guards, hammers, and butt plates still case colored. The 30B rear sight with V notch,1901 patent date, and no slot cut, was standard(only made 1901 until mid-1908).

    •  1906: 3rd model variation introduced with external locking bolts. Model 1906 introduced(shotgun-style butt and round 20” barrel).

  • 1919: Winchester changes the Model 1890 nomenclature to “Model 90” around Serial No. 640,000 and adds the 22 Long Rifle(LR)caliber.

  • 1926-1932: Black-lacquered stainless-steel barrels are offered.

  • 1932: Production of the Model 90 and Model 06 discontinued as Winchester replaces both models with the new Model 62.
  • 1942: Model 1890/90 and 1906/06 final production with parts clean up on hand.

Rick,

I highly recommend reading the article found here – Winter 2025 (winchestercollector.org)

I went back to read the article (again), makes more sense to me after two or three readings. It’s so easy to see how folks can stumble into these and be confused by it all…true for everything else Winchester too haha.

Jeremy,

I agree and unless a person has the Ned Schwing book on the model 1890, which I don’t, it’s hard to find the actual time lines for the production with all the erroneous info out there. I actually stumbled onto a post that Bert had replied to in-depth a few yrs ago on another forum and used some of that information in my post above, just as a quick reference in relation to the model 1890/90 specifically. I was really just looking for the timeline of the first, second, and third models.

    • 1890: The Winchester Model 1890 pump-action .22 rimfire rifle is introduced, along with the .22 Winchester Rim Fire(22 WRF) cartridge.
    • 1892: 2nd model introduced and a takedown feature is added.

    • 1901: Third model introduced with receivers, triggers, and hammers changed to a blued finish.

    • 1919: Winchester simplifies the Model 1890 nomenclature to “Model 90” around Serial No. 640,000.

    • 1926-1932: Black-lacquered stainless-steel barrels are offered.

    • 1942: The final production year for the Model 1890/90, with parts on hand.

In 1890 the rifle was chambered in short, long and WRF.  The long rifle came out about the same time frame as when they changed the Model designation.  I’m just to lazy to pull out the book.  Like you know Schwing’s book is the best source.

1901: Second model blued receivers and trigger guards, hammers, triggers and butt plates still case colored.

1906: Third model with external locking bolts introduced.

Thank you, rustyjack. I’m going to see if I can edit and add that to the first post. I just sent Bert an email questioning the third model introduction I posted.

Rick,

Any editing to you’re original post is a great idea. This, along with Bert’s great article and other members added information is a great reference tool to quickly refer to

Pretty sure the First model, Solid Frame, changed after serial number,15,000. Not sure if that has been posted yet.

I was lucky to find a couple nice Schwing books on eBay a while back at a great price. The most useful books I’ve bought so far that’s germane to my interests (you’re a close second JWA, just don’t collect a lot of 69’s haha).

I understand from talking to Elden Moody at the Tulsa show Saturday that the softback, combined later version has some updated info in it, as a few of his rifles were pictured in the additional pages.
