OfflinePics will not come through. They just disappear.
My friend Tom scoped my M75, one of the last made, with a Baby Redfield, and after sight ins, put 10 rounds of Eley dead center on a 50 yard target, benched, that you could cover with a dime. Surprised me. Didn’t think a M75 could shoot that well. Big Larry

OfflineLarry,
My July 1942 production Model 75 Target makes a large ragged 5-shot hole @50 yards if I do my part. It is the reason why I never pursued a Model 52… I did not feel I needed to spend $$$$ on a BA Winchester .22 rim fire rifle that would not shoot any better.

I have owned just about every model of M52 made, and most will shoot groups like this at 100 yards. I use a Lyman STS 20X scope. Best of all was a M52-C BULLGUN. Sold it. Have 4 M52’s left. This problem I have in my hands, leaves them numb and very difficult to shoot. Especially my trigger finger. Big Larry

OfflineI haven’t scoped either of my 75 Target rifles but when I do my part they are capable of one inch groups at 50 with the Redfield or Lyman sights and Eley Pistol Match ammo. My 52C is capable of a little better accuracy but it is also a bit easier to shoot accurately given the heavier weight and excellent trigger. With a better shooter and/or perhaps a scope they would all do a little better. Covering a group with a dime is pretty awesome but Tom is obviously a very good shooter and that rifle quite likely is exceptionally accurate.. I practice with Norma Match and Norma Tac, both give me 1.5″ at 50 with the occasional flier (common with this ammo) when the loose nut behind the butt is having a good day. I don’t remember what kind of accuracy my scoped 75 Sporting gives me, obviously I need to go shoot it!

Yeah, Tom is a good shot. He tests all my guns for me. Then cleans and Ren Waxes them. He too has a substantial gun collection. Nice stuff too. Big Larry

Bert . . .
At what tension do you think the barrel band screw should be set at?
I have a 1938-era, M75 Target with an 8x Lyman Junior Targetspot.
I believe when manufactured, Winchester set the screw TIGHT!
Wha’da’ya’think?

I do not have an answer to that question. When I acquired the rifle some 20-years ago, it shot extremely well so I did nothing to it. It has not ever been out of its stock. That stated, if your rifle is not shooting as well as you think it should, I would loosen the screw to the point is has no tension on it, and the progressively tighten it (in 2-inch pound increments) until the groups stop getting tighter.

OfflineI shoot three 75s.. two with 15x Super Target Spots and 1 with a Redfield 3200… all are very accurate and draw a lot of interest at the range when I take them out.. .. JWA’s book is an incredible resource on these rifles and the info he provides is overwhelming. I find myself trying to measure the height of the stock’s comb to see if I have a type I oe II. etc. great fun..

OfflineI love hearing about the accuracy of the ones you’re shooting, as they are built for that, as you’re well aware of.
To me, JWA’s style of writing, and detailed information is second to none. I find myself going back to it again and again, as the way he’s done his research, and then conveyed it to us collectors, is second to none.
I can’t wait for his next book, and whatever follows, as he’s in high demand! IMO!

OfflineThanks for the kind words!
Just as a teaser, the third book in the pre-1963 Winchester .22 bolt action repeating rifle series will be on the Model 56 and Model 57, with an introductory chapter covering the Winchester Junior Rifle Corps in detail.
I am hopping for a publication date late next year as that is the 100th anniversary of those models.
Thanks again for slogging through the books, I love doing the research and enjoy sharing the info even more!
