Rick,

Here is the page from Schwings book. Note that the hang tag should say  22 magnum. the GB gun’s tag does not.

Is it possible that the GB tag is an original tag, but is not for that rifle?  That is, it is for a standard M61 and not a magnum M61?

Imo, I don’t think so Steve. The tag from the RIA 22 magnum is the same as what Ned Schwing has illustrated in his book and not the one on gun broker. I have to agree with Bo, not the original tag. Regardless, the GB gun is still a very nice example.

I don’t believe it’s an original tag either.

Rick –

I appreciate your thoughts and don’t disagree with you.

However, I won’t make a connection between the legitimacy of the hang tag and the legitimacy of the box.  I think both need to be evaluated separately.

I believe the box to be original to the gun. My opinion.

Some might argue we’re making a big deal out of nothing, but when the final price is finally determined, it is a big deal that the included tags and documents and box are original…imo!

Old cardboard can be VERY expensive, that said the box looks legit

Yes,  I as well agree that the above hang tag is correct.  For a 1962 Winchester Model 61 .22 Magnum.  With it stating that it is a Division Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation.  I would feel better if the box was so marked.  I know that in 1963 the Mathieson Chemical Corporation listing was dropped.  It is very close.  So, maybe the box is correct for the rifle.

I believe the box is correct. That’s my $0.02.

To split hairs, I wouldn’t bet on the serial number written on said box one way or the other.

That’s very helpful.  I was interested that the non-magnum version specified the 24 inch barrel.  Do you know if they made specific hang tags for other variations such as smoothbore, .22 short only or octagon barrel?

Steve I went through several auctions with original box and tags and concluded only the symbol number was changed for the smoothbore. The replica tags don’t have the symbol number but, they might start appearing after this thread. The smoothbore is SYMBOL No. 6116.

Thanks for the information Rick!

I have learned much from this thread.
