My grandpa recently gave me a Winchester Model 290 he bought ages ago. Out of sheer curiosity, I’ve been trying to find more info on it, hopefully find out when it was made (Serial is in the 40XXXX range). Unfortunately, both Winchester and Cody hadn’t even heard of that model. The most I’ve been able to find are a few pictures of print ads from the 1960s.
Does anyone here have more information on the model 290, or other places I could look?

From 1968 to 1974 I worked in The Winchester International Division in New Haven, CT. and I owned a model 290 (G29011) (Checkered forearm & grip. The model G29001 is the same gun but without the checkering). The people that would have the manufacturing information/data would have been the Product Service Division, unfortunately and sadly, the New Haven arms factory closed a few years ago and I can only guess who could help you; try to contact the Olin Corporation and try to hook up with somebody who might have their fingers in the Winchester Arms archives. Olin still owns Winchester Ammunition in East Alton, Illinois and have long before I was part of the Winchester crew, but they only know ammo and not so much about guns.
How I saw your message was because I want to buy a model 290, preferably a G29011 (checkered) called Deluxe the none checkered is called the standard; so if you want to sell your gun and is in good shape, contact me at: [email protected] or give me a call at (813) 963-7051.
Best of luck.
