History repeats itself…. Jeff shows up a day late and still seems to uncover the best finds. To top it off, he finds it the second day he’s here. Now I not going to steal his thunder of announcing his discovery, just giving fair warning to others that he and Elliot are both to be weary of at the shows. If “nuggets” are to be found, they will be tough to beat.
I purposely delayed my arrival by a day and a half to the show to give everyone a fair chance to score all the baubles. It is not my fault that Ben was so busy selling stuff that he did not notice that 2 tables down there were a pile of Winchester slings (amongst others). The seller wanted $15 each or 3 for $30. I didn’t want to be greedy so I only took 3 at $10 each, including the Winchester sling with the Super Grade swivels still hanging on it……
Aside from finding a few things to annoy Ben I was able to purchase a Winchester Model 57, .22 Short, serial number 92. That is now the lowest recorded Model 57 serial number in the survey of over 1000 rifles.
I also finally talked Larry Orr out of his factory-scoped Model 57 with a Winchester A5. I have been eyeing it for several years and finally saved up enough lunch money to buy it.
The Model 75 book is done and off to the printer, guess which Winchester .22 Bolt-Action Repeating Rifle model is next in line for a book.
It was great seeing everyone at the show, and especially the WACA folks that made the journey.

Well Im guessing a book on the 57? I can’t wait for your offering of the Book of 75s. I own three of them and shoot them regularly. It’s like an addiction to hunt for them. Ive been selling off all my other rifles and hand guns, other than 22s, to generate the dosh for my next 75.
Jeff, You are The Man when it comes to Winchester rimfires!
I’ve reserved a place in my grandfather’s own barrister’s bookcase, the one with the glass fronted doors, for your Model 75 book. Only the most important volumes in my little library go there for reference and display.
If you can spot a Winchester sling with Super Grade swivels a couple of days behind our more.– ah, avaricious –Members…..
In all fairness, you should provide your fellow Members with a list of the forthcoming shows you are NOT going to attend, to give the less sharp-eyed among us (including me) a reasonable chance at the hidden good stuff.
With your eyes and nose, it’s a good thing for the French you took up Winchesters instead of truffles.

I packed a couple of 75’s for a range trip with Jeremy P but a benchrest match (not on the club website calendar!) and an action match in the 50 yard bay forced a change of plans. Fortunately a few Trap guns (including a Y Model 12) were just a few miles away. Jeremy showed real promise on the Trap field! Seems he couldn’t miss on Station One. I suppose I’ll have to slip out to the club during the week to re-familiarize myself with those Model 75’s in preparation for JWA’s book on the subject! I suppose I could drag my safe queen 57 out of hiding while I’m at it. Still wanna see the .22’s Jeremy has been scoring lately but will have to wait.
JWA, that was nice of you to give the rest of us a head start. Apparently you’re getting around better these days. Nice scores on the 57’s, I reckon we might get a look at them someday.
Mike
JWA should be stopping by my house on his way home, Wednesday. I’ll get the lowdown on the happenings at the show. I think he will be checking the two M72’s I have. One is a M72-A.. Both real nice and the M72 is capable of dime size groups at 50 yards. My friend Tom shot the 10 shot group. JWA will not be bringing donuts as he will he arriving late. BTW, I own a real nice M57. I had two, but recently sold one. Have yet to shoot it. Big Larry

Yep, you are still on my schedule. It will likely be sometime between 4-5pm but I will give you a call when I get on the road from Colorado Springs. There is some construction going on highway 70 in the Rockies (as usual) so that may delay me a bit.
Looking forward to seeing you!

Given the “If it’s too good to be true, it ain’t true” attitude of collectors, especially those who’ve been burned, the SG swivels could have just been hiding in plain sight.”

It was a rat’s nest pile of cheap slings, which I had to untangle to separate the Winchester slings so they weren’t readily visible at first. I just kept digging deeper than most because I could “smell” Winchester in there somewhere…..

That was a fun change of plans, even better when I didn’t suck as bad as on the skeet field my first time….jeez…..we need some folks on here to join us…..three more empty spots, Zeb!
I’m enjoying the .22 hunt now more than anything. Loved the 69 book, looking forward to the pre-order for the 75 book and then hunting one of those down! I’m gonna need a signed author special though, JWA… 😁

Big Larry I’ve missed out on a few good ones but just acquired this 72A for $300 U.S.

Good find JWA. That’s the kind of effort that gets you the prize. Well deserved.

Well I was thinking that Jeff bought the 75 Target I was looking for. I love to dig through the piles of stuff. I found a new set of the Slide action rifles books. The guy wanted $130 a piece or would sell me the set for $200. I bought the second volume and one our members bought the first volume.
