I stopped at a local gun shop today and they just acquired a pretty decent Winchester M47 bolt action single shot .22. It did not look like it had a walnut stock.
We took the butt plate off and took the action out of the stock to see what the raw, unfinished wood looked like.
It actually looked like the cherry stock that was on my model 67A single shot and my model 55 .22 single shot.
Would this be another Winchester .22 with a cherry stock?
And I know you’re going to ask what price was on the gun. He hasn’t priced it yet.
I wonder if it will shoot as good as Big Larry’s M47.
Yeah, a pretty decent gun that looks to be all original. About all the blue, wood finish looks OK, great bore. Chromed bolt and trigger. Trigger guard is blued. No warts or sins.
Maybe a $150 – $200 gun? I’ll stop by there next Tuesday and see what he has on it.

Certainly could be cherry, it seems at some point Winchester got a buy on a load or two of cherry wood and it shows up on a variety of gunstocks. I think the gun your looking at is a bit more than $150 or $200, more like $300 in today’s market in my area and it wouldn’t sit on the shelf.

I agree completely with Vince.
I have seen cherry on a variety of .22 models during that period, including the 47, 55, 67A, 69A and 72A. Have not seen a cherry stock on a 77 but I would guess that is possible also. $250-$300 is what the nice 47’s are going for here out West also.

Hopefully the shop owner will agree with your $150-200 price but to be quite honest my 47 cost me over twice that and was worth every penny, IMHO. The automatic safety is a bit annoying at times but the trigger is just barely this side of awesome.

I stopped by the shop yesterday and they let me have the M47 for $200.00 +$16.00 sales tax. He wouldn’t drop the sales tax if I paid cash as he usually does because he said there was another guy that was going to buy it. That kinda makes it hard to dicker on the price so what the heck!
Yep, pretty clean gun as you can see by a few pictures below. Some minor handling marks on the wood and there are some scratches in the blue on the under side of the barrel just forward of the fore end wood.
I hope to get out this weekend and make it go BANG and see how it shoots.
I shoot a side by side shotgun, as in several thousand rounds in the past couple years, that goes back on SAFE when the lever is pushed over to the right to open the gun. So I’m pretty used to that feature.

I did get the gun above out to the range this weekend to see how it shot.
It did fairly well at 25 yards with 1.5″ groups and about 3″ groups at 50 yards. Not outstanding but OK by an 82 year old shooter with the standard sights on the gun.
I’m sure if in the hands of a better shooter, it would do a lot better. I oughta get it out to Big Larry to see just how well it shoots.

I think 3″ groups at 50 yards are sufficient for a hunting-plinking rifle. It is not meant to be in the M52 class as it is not a target rifle. You did well buying it for that price. Let me know when you get tired of it. Big Larry

I sure will Big Larry.
Then we’ll know just how well it does shoot.

Bill, I am 76 and shake quite a bit now. My shooting is not so good anymore. My Grandson shoots better than I do. My Dad was on the USMC shooting team and retired in 1957. He shot my duty gun when I was a Reserve Deputy Sheriff and put 50 rounds into the black with his, now mine, Target Woodsman at 25 yards, with one hand. He never fired two handed in his whole career. He Distinguished in 1952 winning top shot in the Marine matches in Quantico. I have all his gold medals. After shooting my service revolver, he never again fired a gun. He knew when to quit. Bill you are a good guy. I can tell that by our dealing together. Thanks, Big Larry

Thanks Big Larry and a hearty salute to you and your Dad.
Hi Bill,
Sorry I am late to the party. Your 47 looks very nice, you did well!
With the 32B rear sight your Model 47 is a Winchester catalog number G4702R and is the later of the 4 variants.
Typically you can squeeze a little better accuracy out of them with good ammo although they do tend to be a bit picky. Try some Wolf Match and see what it does from a rest. Mine like the Wolf for some reason.

Hi Jeff/JWA,I don’t have any Wolf .22’s. When I shoot it again, I’ve got some older Remington Standard Velocity’s and I’ll see how that works. And I have some recent Federal’s too.
Thanks for the details on that model 47.
Take care.

Get some Wolfs. Pretty good stuff, sometimes. I need to get some as well. I have been having good luck with CCI standards. Big Larry
