Saw some CCI 22 Long CB ammo on the shelf today. As I seem to be heading down the rimfire path to doom and ruin should I put some on MY shelf so that I can shoot a rifle to be named later? Price was under $11.
I do know in caliber specific 1890’s the long CB ammo does not cycle as the bullet is to short and a second round comes to far back into the reciever causing a jam. It won’t be an issue in a bolt gun with multi chamberings. That being said, Shorts or LR shells are cheaper to shoot. Myself, I would get regular 22 longs (if I had a caliber specific rifle in mind down the road) or the Lr’s or shorts for that matter for a multi chambered gun. JME……..

Didn’t know that about the 1890, that’s the rifle I had in mind. Thanks!
Our local Sportsmans Whse has been getting lots of 22 Longs. CB and regular. I bought well over 500 rds of standard longs not needing any CC’s as the 22 long cartridge itself is not very powerful. This cartridge has been long missing on the shelves of all sporting goods stores for a long time now, so when it showed up, I wiped them out. Not to worry though, they replaced it almost immediately. Same with 22 shorts. Today is payday and I am going to get more shorts and longs. The 22 short CB’s seem to function well in my M1873 22. I have many other old rifles that take these cartridges that I have yet to test. Particularly my 1907 vintage M1890 and my 22 short M56. I also bought some of the 22 short target ammo for my M1885 SS Target Rifle. That seems to work well in all my 22 short rifles tested so far. I just have too many old rifles and it is too cold to shoot. Big Larry
I have a couple of model 1890’s in .22 long, both 2nd and 3rd models. Never had any problem feeding CCI .22 long either CB or HV.
I was given a M1890 (1907) back in 1959, and fed BB caps through it, single shot, for many years in my backyard shooting Sparrows for my cat to eat. The bore looks like a dirty stovepipe, but it shoots well with any 22 longs I have put though it when I finally was able to afford them. The rifle has sat in my safe for at least 15 years, but now that ammo is once again available, I plan on taking it out and shooting it. Targets at 50 yards. Big Larry
