Not great pics, they don’t do it justice. IMHO the only thing that keeps this from being a 100% gun is a few small scratches on the crown. Was trying to get a pic of them but gave up.
And no, this one’s not going to the range with me.

Holy cow that is a nice 63! What the he!! took you so long to bring that one home? You don’t find them in that condition often.
I would have never taken a chance and let that one sit on a rack, that is what credit cards are for 😉
Nice score!

Thanks, guys. I can’t believe I got away with leaving this rifle on the rack for three weeks. Even worse, JWA. I had the cash in my pocket. Some things are just meant to be.

Thanks, Cliff. I’ve had an incredible run of luck recently and quite honestly the old adage about blind hogs and acorns is running a little thin, even for me. Timing is a bit unfortunate as I haven’t had any income since September but I have a special fund for times like this.
You’re always welcome to go out and beat the bushes with me, sir, just send me a PM.

You’re a braver (or more careful) man than I, Joe. I have another 63 that I can shoot so this one will be a safe queen. I have a couple of other old Winchester .22’s that I enjoy shooting more and they’re not particularly collectible.
Wow, beautiful 63 Mine is from ’55 non grooved and not used very much. The only mark on it is a two inch scratch on the butt stock and rack wear on the barrel. Wish it was grooved. My eyes need scopes.

I noticed the stock is a straight grip instead of the standard pistol grip but has the Model 63 butt plate ( shotgun style and not crescent style, as the Model 03 had ). I assume someone has cut the pistol grip off and refinished the stock to make it a straight grip. Please let me know if a straight grip Model 63 was ever available from the factory. I have owned quite a few Model 63’s and have never heard of a straight grip ever available from Winchester. I did see a recent for sale add with serial number in the 172,xxx range that had a grooved receiver, plastic front cap ( Plunger groove inverted ) and straight grip with crescent butt plate. I assumed someone had used a Model 1903 rear stock with the Model 63 barrel, receiver and front stock. The stocks were also checkered.

Yes, Mark, it was a rare original straight grip 63. I believe the pictures tell the story better than I do. It sold at the Morphy auction about 16 months ago. I have never seen another, a couple of collectors have seen one and possibly two others but not in this condition.

That is a very striking rifle. I would not shoot it. I have a pair of M63’s with mellow finish wear – no problem at all shooting them. In fact, I can relax and enjoy it. It would not be relaxing for me to take that one on a range trip.
It was too nice for me to keep around, turned it for a nice profit. My other 63 was a bit unusual too so it too, has gone. I wouldn’t mind having a “shooter”.
