JeffHard to tell from the pictures if they were stamped before being blued or after. I’m betting on after. Have you found them in any area of the country or all over?
If you find another numbered 67A keep me in mind. I’d like to have one.
Jay
Hi Jay,
I have better pictures but not in my computer while I am on the road. Based on previous close scrutiny with a magnifying glass, they were either stamped BEFORE bluing OR the bluing was touched up after stamping. There is NO shiny metal on ANY of the ones I have examined in person (about 25).
I have seen them all over the country, not really in any specific region.
I will keep you in mind for a numbered 67A, I see about 1 or 2 per year (but that is without actually looking).

Thanks JeffI’m going with touched up after. I find it hard to believe Winchester would have hand stamped that many rifles.
Have a great day.
Jay
I am not so sure, you are talking about the same Winchester that crudely took an electric engraving pencil to thousands of Model 52’s because the government told them to……..

I did and I am sorry. I will try to not let that happen again.
I tried to answer your email and I could not get it to work. Nice pics. I have some of my Granddaughter shooting . My old M53 with a 22 cylinder at the SDPD range in San Diego. She was about 16 years old. Now a married Mormon girl with 7 kids. Still very pretty at near 50 years. Thanks for being my friend. Big Larry

Excellent question, wish I knew regarding the barrel numbers but haven’t been able to track it down.

Hi, I am in New Zealand and my two M 69As which are serialed
86527
8817
I doubt if there anything like that number of M 69s in NZ so I presume that they were factory stamped as it was a requirement for Commonwealth countries .
I believe Winchester changed the action to suit Canadian rules, the customer was always right in those days.

Hi Ray,
Do you have a picture of the serial number and location? The serials I have seen on the NZ guns usually look a bit different than the ones above but you never know……
If you can’t post them here you can send them to my email or post them over at Rimfire Central.

BTW, FWIW, as to the the US markings on the M52’s and many M70’s, they are, in fact, put on with an Electric Pencil by hand. According to Paulene Muerrel, they were done at the factory as the numbers ordered was too small to make up special dies. Pauline should know, as she was there. I have owned several rifles with the hand applied US Property, and they all appeared to be applied by the same person. Now, in the case of the M52-B, some were stamped US Property, but I see no proof of that. The ones I have seen seem to be consistent though. Many are gimmicks to raise the values of these rifles and are most certainly fake. Without proper documentation, it is hard to tell the fakes from original. Buyer beware!!! Big Larry

Just for interest this is a M 04 that was called up for WW11, no one knows what SPS referred to, the arrow to arrow is the NZ sold out of service mark.
But it was marked here in New Zealand

James, As far as the rifles go that were numbered here in Australia, it came about that every firearm had to have a serial number when registration came in. Those that didn’t have a number then it was put on by the owner themselves. As you can imagine they come in all shapes and sizes depending on what stamps you had at the time. Trace.
Thank you for the information.
