This one is stamped 1890 on the barrel. 1919 was the introductory year for the 22 lr and it was also the transition year for the model 1890 to be called just the model 90. Does anyone have any idea how many 1890’s were produced in 22lr.
I believe this was ordered with upgraded sights. It has the Marbles “economy” tang sight, the folding rear leaf and the beach combination front sight. The butt stock has some figure to it but nothing exceptional.
I have seen model 90’s chambered in 22 lr with a bit lower serial #’s but I am guessing this barrel ended up on the bottom of the barrel bin for a bit of time.
I think it is a rather rare variation but would like to hear other members input.

Hi Erin,
Can you post a closeup photo of the caliber marking on the barrel?
Thanks,

I cant answer your question on the number of 22LR with the full 1890 model number, but I do happen to own #633077 in this variation. This is one reason I have kept this particular 1890 in my collection. I also thought it was interesting to have the end of the 1890 designation overlapping with the beginning of the 22LR chambering.

The Rifle is a 22 Long that was re chambered to 22 long rifle. The barrel markings on an original 22 long rifle spell out Long Rifle not Long R.
I would not put any money on that… Winchester marked all of the Model 1885 rifles and Winder Muskets “22 LONG R.” There is no reason to believe that the same marking could not have been used on the real early Model 1890 rifles in 22 Long Rifle.

I believe you are incorrect…. If you reference Schwings book of slide action rifles, vol. 1 on page 53 you will see the exact marking that is used on my rifle.

I agree the caliber marking looks correct also. It is the early style of LR marking on the 1890.
