I have a 75 Sporting that when won’t eject the shells correctly. One out of three or even one of two empty shells ends up back in the loading tray area. The last round from a couple different magazines ejects okay. Fast operation of the bolt doesn’t help.
An inserted magazine in this gun is super loose compared to my two M52 guns. This is my first M75. The ejected shell will flip back into the loading tray area. The ejector is installed right and the extractors are also in right.
My gun has a super low mounted Weaver 330 in Stith mounts yet I have looked at it closely and the ejected shells hitting the scope doesn’t seem to be the problem. A slow bolt retraction on an empty magazine causes a correct and vigorous ejection.
I am thinking the loose, fore and aft magazine retention might be the problem, letting the live cartridges to tip up and bump the ejected shells, perhaps. Regardless, let me know what the group thinks about any common problems regarding ejection they might know of considering my described problem. Also, let me know about any other common issues that might cause loose magazines.

On Winchester Model 75 Target rifles, I’ve seen a couple of cases where problems with magazines not fitting right were caused by someone backing out the trigger spring adjusting screw too much, to try to lighten trigger pull.
When the screw is backed out too much, it can end up pressing against the stock, causing the action to not seat properly in the stock, which then causes problems with the magazine.
I don’t know if the Model 75 Sporting could also have this issue, but may be worth checking.

Thanks for the ideas! My magazines are all older ones. I have only had M52 guns up to this point and the magazines latch in differently compared to a 52. The 75 hold the magazines a lot looser than the two 52 models I have. I had thought the loose magazines were causing the ejection malfunction.
However, I tried the gun by removing the mag after shooting yet before ejection and discovered:
—pulling the bolt back fast causes the empty shells to fall back into the feed area.
—pulling the bolt back slowly ejects the shells clear yet weakly with no spin.
What is the group’s thoughts considering this situation?
Thanks!

Hi JC,
All of the above suggestions are good and valid and the most common reasons for ejection issues. The fore-aft looseness on the magazine “should not” normally create an issue as that vector is not adjustable. The side to side movement can be played with somewhat by the takedown screw stud in the barrel dovetail simply by shifting it a little left or right.
There are a few more less common areas to investigate.
Check the spring tension on both of the extractors, they should be fairly stiff and equally tensioned on both left and right. A quick extraction might cause one side to let loose early.
Also, take a look at the ejector which is the half-moon bare-metal component in the bottom of the bolt raceway. The front edge of that should be angled slightly to kick the cartridge up and away. I have seen some modified (for unexplainable reasons) that then cause ejection problems.
If neither of those are an issue report back and we will dig deeper.
Good luck, the Model 75 is a great rifle and worth the effort to get it correct.
