Interesting, I have a 61A which was manufactured in 1941 and it has the hard rubber butt stock plate. It appears to be original so perhaps they were using both hard rubber and steel.

My son purchased the second volume of Schwings book for me as a Xmas gift. After glancing through it, the checkered hammer was standard through WWII. The serrated butt plate is our anomaly here. Schwing depicted two types of butt plates, a checkered steel one for the first few years and then the composite one for the duration. He missed the serrated ones during the war years.

The three model 62a’s we’ve talked about here with the serrated steel butt plate are all in the same serial number range: 152979, 152893, 152469.
