My son purchased the second volume of Schwings book for me as a Xmas gift. After glancing through it, the checkered hammer was standard through WWII. The serrated butt plate is our anomaly here. Schwing depicted two types of butt plates, a checkered steel one for the first few years and then the composite one for the duration. He missed the serrated ones during the war years.
