OfflineI came across a model 1890 (serial #1089) at a local store with a Lyman rear tang sight and the original solid rear barrel sight and looks like original front sight.
The barrel is “P” marked, so I know it’s a replacement (and not great shape) but the receiver is in “good” condition (no finish left but no major dings/dents and looks pretty good)
if this was under $1300 is this a buy now? I know it’s not a complete original rifle, which tanks the value, but the receivers match, and looks like everything else is original too.
I know these are pretty sought after and I’d like to have one for my collection, and I know I definitely can’t afford a minty one. So I’m thinking this might be it.
I’ve been looking for a very clean 2nd model (thinking $1500 range) (but never thought I’d ever see a first model. )
But if it’s not worth more than a 2nd model in similar condition (and all original) then I’ll pass…
If I do pass, and someone else is interested I can share details.
But seems like I should jump on this one.
Should have taken pics…

OfflineWell I guess this answers my question….
This one sold for $895 and looks all original……? But that seems low maybe?

OfflineIt would make a big difference whether the barrel was replaced with an original 24 3/8 ” barrel or just a later 24″ , and with no case color remaining I wouldn’t put a great value on it. And You are right, a decent “original” 1st. model is getting fairly pricey

OfflineIt’s definetely not all original, but even so it seems it may be worth it just to have a bit of history.
I need another Lyman tang sight, and they’re about $200 alone.
I also have an early barrel (I need to see if it’s the 24 or 24 3/8″) but it’s been redone by Turnbull, bought it as a bunch of parts.
Maybe I’ll buy this, send it in for CCH and swap out the barrel…..would be pretty cool. I’m pretty sure this will be the only time I may have a chance to get a first model.

I think somebody stole that one, didn’t they? That’s seems crazy low if it’s all original. Or maybe I’m just wholy unaware of the value of these….?

I think that was a very good price, I’ve seen real raty ones sell a little more then that
The best deals I’ve found were usually from sellers who didn’t know what they had.
This was at a pawn shop in WA state. with a $500 buy it now price. I was afraid they wouldn’t complete the sale.
