I just acquired The Red Book of Winchester values(4th Edition) by Larry Shennum(Ph.D) & WACA’s own Bert Hartman(B.S) editor.
For new Winchester collectors I must say this book has excellent information & will be a go to reference in the future. It doesn’t take the place of me constantly emailing Bert with pics & value inquiries which be always generously responds, but certainly gives the collector a good idea of values that I didn’t have prior.
If you’re new to collecting I highly recommend obtaining a copy.

I respectfully disagree, AG. I quickly found I need TWO copies; one close to my reading chair and another in the map pocket of the vehicle I use to make my rounds of the “orphanages”. Occasionally there just isn’t time to go home and consult my reference library and keeping one copy with me has helped me avoid mistakes and discover bargains on more than one occasion.

Good idea Mike but I would like a condensed pocket version.

While we’re wishing how about a digital version stored on our phones?

Quite honestly I’m glad that some of my favorite “orphanages” are ignorant of the Red Book and I hope they remain that way. 😉

Got my Red Book today. Haven’t had time to start studying yet, but I will soon.
I am planning to write & publish one final edition of the Red Book in the not so distant future. I intend to expand on the descriptive information for many of the models, and provide more detailed information about the production numbers of the specific variations for the models that I have been surveying and researching.

That’s quite an undertaking in today’s market but the additional info would be welcome, Bert. Many of the tidbits in the current edition are not easily found elsewhere and I know your research continues daily. I’m not fond of that word “final” tho, unless you have other projects in mind. I’m hoping you have many more years to continue your research after you eventually retire (again).
Do you have a book project in the wings that we should know about?
Mike
Mike,
I have two other book projects that I am working on. One for the Model 1885, and another that will cover the Models 53, 55, 64, 75, and 71. As it stands today, I am less than 4-years from retiring, and starting a full time job of writing.

I have owned some cool 71’s. One I bought from a local Dr’s estate. He flew it all around Alaska in his airplane. A deluxe model. I killed a 9 1/2′ Brown bear with it, and also a bull moose. The brown bear took 7 rounds at 25 paces, and the 71 only holds 5 so there was a tactical reload going on. Every round knocked him down, but he got back up awful fast. The rug hangs on my wall all these years. I have some high walls and low walls I want you to look at next time I’m in the state. I sold a solid frame 55 in 30-30 about 2 years ago.
Shoot low boys. They're riding Shetland Ponies.

I’m looking forward to it Bert.

I have to agree. The Red Book is an invaluable source and look forward to the next edition. Bert is an even more invaluable SME who takes time to reply to my constant inquiries on valuations, etc. Must acknowledge and same applies to Michael, Kurt, and Erin whom I have reached out to in the past. Not to dismiss all the other great SME and records keepers who respond to all our varied inquiries on the forum.
Unfortunately, being from the SW, many parties I have interfaced with and specifically regarding selling any particular platform, they always refer to the Fjestad Blue Book which undervalues prices referenced in the Red Book.
Flip side, I imagine, is a plus as Texgunut referenced previously.
Bert, hope you are able to expand more information/valuations on Model 1892 Special Short Rifles, specifically with 14” barrels.
Bert, again. Thank-you for all you have done for all of us as well as the rest of the full compliment of SMEs on the forum.
Hope you all have a Merry Christmas and better New Year!

Fjestad’s Blue Book in the hands of an unscrupulous gun dealer is a sellers worst friend. Blue Book values are almost always below true market value.
