I would like to introduce you to my new acquisitions:
Winchester M1893 in 12 gauge with 20 inch barrel. Serial number B27398
and
Winchester M1887 in 12 gauge with 22 inch barrel. Serial number 45702
What do you think? I’m not sure if the barrel lengths are original.
Greetings from Germany

Steff, hopefully someone else will straighten this out for you. I don’t believe the 1893 was offered with a short barrel? The 1887 was offered in a 20″ barrel. Are the barrels marked for the choke? I would guess the riot length guns would have a CYL choke. If either says Full it has been cut.
Edit:
Steff, I just looked at Larry and Bert’s Red Book and they do list a 1893 riot length with a 20″ barrel. I had looked at Flayerman’s and it wasn’t listed.

Bert and Larry’s book does list a riot configuration for the 1893. Swearengen’s book claims that riot guns were not offered until 1898, so the Model 1893 did not come in riot configuration. But he also states that there are many examples of 1893 riot guns out there and they were either factory built or cut down. I have data on a few riot configuration 1893s. A couple of them actually lettered as having a 20″ barrel. So even if not offered in the Winchester catalog, I’m sure a 20″ barrel could be specially ordered.
And I just found some info from Bert Hartman that the exact number of Model 1893s made in riot configuration was 645.

For those who are interested, Winchester did indeed manufacture a fair number or “Riot” Gun Model 1893 shotguns. There are handful that are quite rare though. The attached picture shows the factory ledger entry for serial number 19967… take note that it states “Sling Ring & Staple”. A I actually had my hands on this gun several years ago, but could not convince myself to spend $10K for it.

Bert – that is ridiculously cool! I’ve never seen anything like it. Aesthetically I think it is very unattractive but viewed through collector’s eyes, it is beautiful. And that ledger entry makes it so very beautiful!

And that is the exact reason I had a very hard time putting it down after I picked it up. The condition of the gun is ridiculous as well, easily 95%, and some would say “mint” (but not me). Factory original 20-inch Riot Gun with a sling ring & staple… it does not get much rarer than that!!
