Winchester Model 1892 Trapper – .44 WCF (15″)

I’d like to share another Model 1892 Trapper from my collection and ask for member opinions—particularly regarding some unusual markings on the buttstock.

Thank you Bert and Micheal for you help and support.

 Firearm Details

  • Model: Winchester Model 1892
  • Type: Trapper
  • Barrel Length: 15 inches
  • Action: Lever Action
  • Calibre: .44 WCF
  • Capacity: 8-shot
  • Serial Number: 996327
  • Date of Manufacture: 1930
  • BATF Curio & Relic List: Yes

Both barrel length and forend length are correct for a factory Trapper configuration.

Provenance & Ownership History

This rifle originally came from J. Zuro, who was 93 years old in 2008, residing in rural Wisconsin…. He apparently obtained this trapper —along with several others—during the 1940s–1950s

Since that time, the rifle has passed through the hands of several well-known collectors in Canada, including Harry Mero, before entering my collection.

I’m sharing this background simply to establish continuity of ownership and collector exposure rather than to imply any conclusions.

Stock Markings – Request for Opinions

I’m particularly interested in member thoughts regarding a series of small, linear notches present on one side only of the buttstock.

Observations:

  • The notches appear consistent in spacing and depth
  • They appear intentionally engraved or cut, rather than random dents, nicks, or impact damage
  • The opposite side of the buttstock is completely unmarked
  • No corresponding damage elsewhere on the stock that would suggest accidental causes

I’m not asserting these are “kill notches,” but I’m curious how experienced collectors interpret markings….
