I had this rifle in my watch list. At first I had disregarded it as being a shortened barrel and magazine. Kept going back to the listing. It sure looked like it was manufactured with a 20 inch barrel. So, contacted Cody for a Serial Number Search. I had seen the lower tang was for a SST. The existing was for a regular trigger set up. The Serial Number Search indicated 20 inch barrel and SST. I was high bidder. The non-Winchester rear sight was replaced. Several mangled screws have been replaced.

Gathered some of the required SST parts, then sent the rifle and parts to Wyoming Armory. There Mark Douglas worked his Magic. The rifle shoots well with jacketed bullets, not so well with cast bullets. It does let out a loud bark.

As the rifle was next to another 1886, noticed that the forend was shorter. Though non visible in the listing, surprised that the caliber marking was on the “side flat”. According to Pirkle, there 120 1886 made with 20 inch barrel.

I would appreciate any information or thoughts on this rifle.

congratulations Stuart! Nice find, a rare 20″ with set trigger! A shame it doesn’t have more condition, but I would have bid on it also because the 20″ doesn’t show up often. I have a 20″ carbine in 38-56 with a nickelsteel barrel not often seen on carbines, it’s not high condition. I’d be happy to have it!

Thanks for your comments. The rifle fits well with the rest of my collection of 1886s. They all are wearing their working clothes. I reload and shoot all of them. Have all of the calibers except the 50-100-450. The 50-110 is the only rifle in my collection that has been “restored”. Being “restored”, it was affordable for my budget. I am looking for a carbine.

Stuart,

Once again, a very nice short rifle that you have in you’re possession. John T. Madl, has done an extensive and detailed research on the M-1886, and printed a booklet, as the 1 st edition, of May, 2003, and if you don’t have that copy, I would suggest that you obtain it, as another member, here on the forum, might be able to help you out with a copy. If you’d like his, or John Madl contact information, you can PM, me as I’m not sure if you’re Short rifle is in his current survey or not, and it should be entered as to help fellow collectors, who help us out with this interesting and ongoing research.

He shows, 19168, 38-56 caliber, M-1886’s in his booklet, in his survey. I’m sure that his numbers have been updated, and he can inform you in an email, as he’s busy like we all are, and as a Gentleman, he will return his emails!Smile

Thanks for sharing! Smile

Anthony,

I do have a 1st Printing copy of John’s booklet, given to me by John at Cody. I do not find 19168. I have obtained an 1886 SST sear from John. He also contributed information on an Extra Heavy barreled 1886 I am building, will finish some day. I purchased a complete action online that letters as Extra Heavy barrel. John supplied the forend cap and forend for me. Yes sir, John is a Gentleman. I will send the information to John.

Thank you for the post!

Stuart
