I wasn’t sure if I should add this to the survey section, as no serial numbers are visible or available, at this posting. I found this on another forum, and wanted to share these as they are very interesting M1885 S.S. rifles, just obtained by a collector.

https://www.rimfirecentral.com/threads/1885-winchesters.1337508/

Bert, we can try to pursue these serial numbers for the survey, as I sent the new owner a PM, on the other forum.

I actually know the fellow who bought those Single Shot rifles… he lives in the Portland Oregon area and longtime OAC member.

Bert,

Glad to hear that as you’re ears must have been burning, as I just learned that from him, in his response to my PM.

I was also curious to what the barrel number might be on that take down? Looks to be a #2, or a #3 to me, as I’m leaning towards my first choice.

A No. 3 barrel was standard for all high-wall rifles regardless of the specific cartridge chambering with the exception of the 35 WCF and 405 WCF rifles.

I have a 25-35 Hi-Wall Ser. #113118, take down, Special Sporting with Schuetzen double triggers.  As I recall, when it came up for auction,  there was no mention of only  80 rifles being chambered in 25-35 caliber.  I have the list Bert posted Feb. 23, 2017 and the 25-35 caliber isn’t listed.  Has there been some information posted that I have missed?  RDB

Tony,

Is it a 44 WCF, 20-inch No. 2 barrel?  If so, it is 1 of 10 that were manufactured and exported to Australia.

Roger,

The list I posted back in 2017 was not all inclusive.  The article that I wrote and published in Winter 2021 Winchester Collector magazine is all inclusive. At the time I wrote it, a total of (72) 25-35 WCF rifles were verified, with (64) in the letterable range, and (8) in the 110000+ serial range.  As of today, the total number of high-wall Single Shot rifles verified to be factory chambered for the 25-35 WCF cartridge is (77).

It is a scarce HW SRC Tony, I sent Bert pictures of it when I viewed it. I know the man that bought it. He has its brother, a consecutive serial number to it. The LW SRC 15” is also a scarce one to find. They are around down here…..

It is actually 1 of 3 known survivors, and there are just (7) more of them out there somewhere.  One of three known, one of them is back here in the U.S., and the other two are in one collection in Australia.  The Carbine you posted is the 3rd one of the ten that has surfaced.

None of them are believed to be marked identifying which specific retailer in Australia imported them.

This is the list of the (10) that were found in the factory ledger records;

23755

23756

23757

23758

23759

23760 (found)

23761

23762 (found)

23763 (found)

23764

I sure do like those short barrel versions of those down under rifles. I always had a hankering for one, ever since I saw one in Madis book years ago!

Bert, that gentleman was more than happy to give me the serial number for the survey, if you want to add it, as long as I didn’t associate it with his name on the public forum. Which I told him that we wouldn’t Serial number #108853, mfg. in 1909, as he was told and thought it was mfg. in 1914.

Have him contact me via email – [email protected]

The 1914 date is bogus (Madis’ erroneous reference).  Per the actual records, it was serialized in October 1909. It went into the warehouse in October 1911.
