My local gun shop, like most today, has a store full of black guns and their accessories, little reloading stuff and nary an old Winchester lever action.  He is eager to buy old Winchesters, it’s just that none ever come in.  This week I got rid of the last of my post 1931 Winchesters and replicas (4 94’s & an 1866 + an 1873 Uberti) there and when we were done he asked me to look at an old presentation case he had taken in without knowing what it was.

This is not within my field of expertise, but after inspecting the case I believe the following is accurate:

It appears to be made of walnut and very heavy (weighs 18 lbs).

It is for an original style Winchester carbine, Model 1892 or 1894, per the buttplate and front sight indentations.

The Winchester plaque on the inside lid is made of leather with the logo either branded in or very nicely punched in.

It is most likely something handmade and not a genuine Winchester case.

After telling this to the shop owner, he offered it to me at no cost.  Since that was well within my budget, I accepted.

Would appreciate any and all input.

Judging from the hardware it looks modern.

“Free” brooks no argument.  Maybe a case for one of those atrocious “Winchester” commemoratives frequently hawked in the Rifleman.
