I really like the 76 – what caliber is it? You don’t see many 76’s which are checkered – I believe I read there were only 530 deluxe 76’s produced and about 75% of the total number of 76’s had round barrels. One of the first things that caught my eye on this 76 was the forearm checkering – I am used to the H-Style checkering on 76’s and the only time I remember seeing the style your 76 has on the forearm was on engraved and/or One of One Thousand and One of One Hundred guns.

It’s in 45-60. It is the nicest Winchester I now own. It was someone’s baby. The bore is at least an 8+. The checkering is absolutely gorgeous.

Manuel, I like your gun. According to Herbert Houze’s book, Winchester made 2680 Deluxe 76’s and The Porter Survey shows 1876 barrels to be 25,738 round, 37,288 octagon, and 773 half round. Regardless of the numbers, a 76 Deluxe was an impressive gun then and yours is now. T/R

Way off topic, but that bird cage behind the gun: A friend and I were hiking just north of the NM border on the west side of the Rio Grande. We crossed an old wagon road and we found an ancient camp spot with junk laying around. We found a flattened bird cage and my friend tried to unflatten it. It looks a lot like yours. Any information on that? Age, etc?

I would have to ask my friend about that bird cage. I took this picture at his place and didn’t even notice the bird cage in the back round. I can ask if you like.

No big deal, but if you happen to remember next time you talk to him, I’d be interested if he knows a date and/or manufacturer. My friend did some research and figured late 1800s to early 1900s and he got a partial name off it but he’s got it buried in his stuff right now. Thanks.
