New to me standard short rifle (on the left) joins my small group of 20” 71s-
Interesting to see how different the stock color/finish and wood grain is from gun to gun. The majority of my 71s have darker reddish wood like the gun on the left.

The special short rifle is a 11/2/1937 build with Lyman no. 6 folding rear barrel sight, which would be a sensible factory option for a 98a bolt peep. This rifle is milled for a bolt peep but never had one installed.

The lighter colored sporting (standard) short rifle is 10/13/41 build with a 22k rear barrel sight.

The dark colored sporting (standard) short rifle is a 9/17/42 build with a 98a bolt peep.

Bert has all three of these in the up to date survey.

Thanks for posting the pictures! CoolCool

Those 20-inch standard rifles are truly awesome additions to a Model 71 collection.  Currently, I have documented a total of (3,503) Model 71 rifles, and of that number, just (52) of them are the 20-inch Standard rifle (1.48% of the total).  The extrapolated manufactured survey number is just (700) as opposed to approximately (2,050) of the 20-inch Special Rifles.

Thanks all!

Bert, I really enjoy the extrapolated info!

I’d estimate I’ve only seen 5-6 standard short rifles in person, and maybe 15 available for sale on the web – in the past 30 years.

Bert,

Another 20-inch standard rifle sold last night on GB that you may or may not have seen.

Here are the details:

*Long tang...  I believe this may be one of highest (if not the highest) serial numbered long tangs on your survey?

SN: 18462

Flat muzzle

98A bolt peep – rear barrel dovetail filled – no hood on front sight

Knurled hammer

Barrel address type-1

Receiver Not drilled and tapped for peep

Joel,

The serial number on that 20-inch Standard is actually 13462.

Good eye Bert!

I zoomed in as far as I could on my phone and had that “3” dead to rights as an “8”.

The good news is that it was a new entry in the survey, bringing the total to (53) Standard 20-inch rifles.

I guess that explains why I can’t recall seeing one in person.
