Hello,

I just inherited my great grandfathers 1892 44-40, the gun overall imo is in great condition has been stored in a safe for the last 30 years and oiled regularly.  It has a serial number of 278764 with an Octagon Barrel with a 44WCF at the start.  From what I can find this gun was made in 1905, I am not sure on the barrel but the blue color still shows on the metal.  Any help identifying or confirming would be great

Marc,

Nice rifle dating to 1904. As your rifle falls into the serial number range of available records, you might want to order a factory letter from the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. The letter usually will provide the rifle’s serial number application, received in warehouse, and shipped from warehouse dates, and order number. Also, information about the original configuration of the rifle – barrel shape and length, caliber, trigger, stock and butt plate, and any special order items. The amount of detail varies.

Thanks,

Gus

Good for you. I am a 82 year old GPA, and I am leaving my Grandkids some real nice rifles including 3 M1892’s. They will appreciate them.  Big Larry

Are there any stories associated with the rifle – such as what your grandfather hunted with it?

Hello Marc

Based on the serial number your grandfather’s Model 1892 sporting rifle was manufactured during 1904.  The rifle has been refinished in the past.  I have added it into my survey.   The “Last date on Barrel” noted by your grandfather is just a patent date and it is found on the first +900000 Model 1892’s.

Thanks so much.
Michael

My dad and his late brother remember hunting with their dad, that would be deer, this is the gun they would both use, all I know from my great grandfather is that he gave it to his son at some point prior to my dad being born in the 50’s. I never had the chance to meet my great grandfather or grandfather.
