OfflineI picked up this little gem at a small gun show this past weekend. With all the fakery out there, model 61’s are not my comfort zone, so hoping this one is legit. Seller was asking $1,225, but we haggled a little back-and-forth and it came home with me for $1,100 plus a $30 background check. Couldn’t pass it up and was willing to take a gamble at that price–before it went home with someone else!!
Michael (twobit)–do you have this one in your survey (serial# 5466)? If so, I sure hope it’s a clean entry with no issues. I took a lot of photos for you. I would rate it at a good 90-95%. If legit, what is a good ballpark value in your opinion?

Don,
You did real good on that one.
Al
Thanks Al. I’m primarily a lever gun collector, so this is the one and only model 61 in my collection (for now). Like I said previously, I have steered away from this model due to all the fakes out there. This one just looked and felt right in hand and couldn’t beat the price. I don’t think the seller understood what he really had and confused its value with the Short, Long, and Long Rifle variants. Sometimes you just get lucky.

Geez Don, I don’t know where you dig these up but, I’m jealous. Great find and price!
Thanks Rick. I picked this up at our little monthly show at the local armory that Oregon Arms Collectors puts on. I attend every month and is usually the same old, same old. But I’ve been lucky the last couple of shows. Got this model 61 this month and picked up a nice original all Winchester correct early M1 carbine. It was an actual GI bring-back and had never been through an arsenal rebuild making it quite scarce. Still has really nice deep cartouches on the stock too.

Don,
Like the others said, A great find all the way around!
You’re knowledge of Winchesters and experience guided you to making this great deal!
Thanks for sharing!

You’re right Anthony. I’ve been collecting Winchesters for going on 30 years now and have looked at and handled many guns and have generally gained that institutional knowledge of what to look for and what to look out for. A good reference library and studying the models you are interested in is also a must. I also give the largest credit to this forum and the amazing amount of knowledge from all the members and experts displayed here on a daily basis. However, the fakers seem to be getting better and better at what they do. That’s where the survey-takers really come into play by calling out and exposing the fraud guns when encountered and I am very thankful for that.
