Recently picked up my first Winchester 1873, enjoying the forum – great knowledge here. Also many thanks to Rob for helping me ID this rifle and tell me a little more about it. 2nd Model ‘73, s/n 47432 dates it to the first month or two of 1880 by my estimation. Seeing as I’m based over here in the UK I’d be interested to know how and why it ended up over this side of the world, were ‘73’s being ordered either by individuals or the govt at that time here? Or did it make its way over much later?
Probably impossible to work out, but it would be great to know!
Nice old carbine. No telling about when it got to your neck of the woods. On one of the pics it looked like there was a blemish on the left side of the barrel by the receiver, are those British proof marks? On the buttstock in one of the photos, it looks like it may have had a sling mount added at one time–looks like a slight notch out of the bottom of the stock, maybe just the pic lighting?
