all,

have been looking at an 1873 in .22 short that has been extensively engraved and inscripted to what I believe to be the original recipient.

was just wondering what everyone thinks about after market engraving and the impact of it on the value of the gun.  I have no pics to share but would appreciate any thoughts and feedback.  the original recipient does not appear to be anyone famous, just someone who got the rifle probably as a gift from what appears to be his wife.  they don’t make them like that anymore!  the wife I mean.

Mark,

I assume you checked and the engraving and inscription does not letter. After market engraving does increase a guns value but not as much factory engraving as long as it was professionally period engraved.

Is there a chance this is factory engraving, Mark?

only had a chance to look at for a couple of minutes and failed to write down the serial number.  am having to chase down some drilling rigs in west texas right now, but hope to get more details in coming weeks.
