Chuck, I don’t have an early Springfield ‘pull thru’ to compare to, but with the bolt removed I would think the longer cleaning piece would work.  The Springfield cleaning brush was about 3″ long the one that came in my carbine is longer.  The main difference is the slot that is part of the brush and that makes my cleaner about 5 1/2″ long.  The pull through cleaners in the 1916 catalog are listed from 6mm thru 50 cal. noting the pull thru is not for the Springfield rifle nor the pistol length cartridges, which would be too short to allow the pull thru to work.   RDB
