DonI’m out of town for a couple days but I will check when I get back gone. Great looking rifle. Just hoping you will get tired of it real quick, discount to half price and sell it to me.
Haha!! I got this one from Tom Vala. I’d been bugging him about it for quite awhile but he wouldn’t sell. He finally got tired of it, but didn’t discount it to half price…Glad to add it to my collection anyway. Wondering how many in this configuration are in your survey.

Hi Bert,
Here’s a couple photos of the butt plate.
Don
Thanks for the pictures. Your Model 1894 Rifle is one of nearly (50) that I was documented thus far with that style of checkered steel butt plate. The most common was a black hard rubber shotgun butt plate, followed by the smooth steel style shotgun butt plate, then the checkered steel shotgun butt plate. It still amazes me that Winchester offered all three varieties at the same time.

That’s interesting Bert. Is that 50 out of your entire 1894 survey?

Don,
It is the number that I have documented in the 354000 – 1158855 serial number range.
Bert
Thanks Bert. I didn’t realize that style of butt plate was that uncommon. A big thank you for all of those conducting the surveys. Sure makes this hobby so much more fun and interesting…and addicting!

Don,
This was new to my survey as well. I’ve recorded quite a few from Tom when I’ve seen him in Cody and Reno. This must be something he didn’t have at those shows. I know he has a good friend with a pile of 94 shorties, according to Tom.
This is the only 1894 short rifle I have with those exact features. Don Grove had one with H checkering and a smooth plate a while back.
Only considering 20″ FM OBs, I have 8 with shotgun butt vs. 85 with crescent. I had a 22″ with that same plate but recently sold it.

Thanks Gary. Glad I could add this one to your survey. It’s a cool little rifle and I doubt I’ll be getting tired of it anytime soon. Tom did have another shorty on his table, but I forgot to jot down the serial number. It was a ELW, 22 inch round barrel, full magazine, 30 WCF. I’ll get the serial number next time I see him. Both rifles came from his friend that is an avid 1894 short rifle collector.

I have a short rifle in .25-35…..But it didn’t start out that way. I had it shortened. It was completely fubard when I got it. Wood was trash, bbl cut at an odd length as was the tube. The metal and bore were in nice condition and I love that caliber. I fitted new wood to it and had the metal blued with minimal buffing. It turned out great and I hunt with it. It had a 26″ barrel I believe before it got hacked on. I’ll post a number when I next drag it out of the safe.
Shoot low boys. They're riding Shetland Ponies.
