I did find this book new without dust cover for $180 + shipping https://gunandswordcollector.com/product/winchester-1876-centennial-rifle-herbert-houze/ but just still found that expensive when they were originally $59.99.
Actually they were $45.
It’s terrible what sellers want for out of print books. I saw one of these where the guy wanted $2,000. You need to keep an open eye and if several come up for sale at the same time someone will discount the book to be able to sell it.
Fortunately over the last 35 years or so I have bought most books when they were first printed or have search out a copy.

Bert, do you have any saddle(sling) ring Rifles in any of your surveys or encountered any in your research with the CFM ?
RickC
Short answer is Yes, I do. That stated, they were special ordered as a Rifle “with sling ring” versus being a factory reworked Carbine. I suspect the Bob has documented at least a few of them in the Model 1873, and that Michael has found a few in the Model 1892.

I have come across a number of records for rifles that letter carbine stock & sling ring.

I highly suspect that to be the case. With the total number of Model 1873, Model 1892, and Model 1894s manufactured, I suspect that there were at least a few hundred of them that were special ordered in that configuration.

Nice 1876 Rick. A rare rifle.I don’t have an 1876, yet.Have been after the Houze 1876 book for a while. Found it about a year ago on Ebay US for $76. I was the highest bidder. Had it shipped to my Auntie in Long Beach CA and she posted it on to me here in Melbourne. For those looking for it, watch ebay. It does come up.Another hard to find book is ‘The Winchester 1873 handbook’ by George Stone. This one took me 4 years to find.Chris
Thanks Chris. I didn’t have one either but I couldn’t pass up the offer to buy something in good condition & rare, specifically in m1876.
I will start checking eBay fir the book. Appreciate the heads up.

Thanks Bert that’s what I was wondering. Just those 3 models would total over 9 million produced so I don’t think it’s a stretch to call a saddle ring rifle rare, imo, & this one possibly the only in a 76.

RickC nice 76 you have there . I have a pic. of an 1876 Winchester short rifle with round barrel and saddle ring . I don’t know if the rifle lettered , it was offered for sale to one of my Winchester collector friend , he declined and passed the offer on to me and often I wish I would have purchased it . It may have been purchased by someone here . I cant post pictures here anymore so if you would like I can send you a pic. if you send me your E-mail . ,,DT
