I am looking at a Model 64 in 38-55 at the upcoming Morphy Auction. Very cautious of this as noted in both the Red Book as well as The Winchester Collectors Winter 2023, that both the 32-40 and the 38-55 are very rare and be wary of the fakes. The lot number on this one is 2253. How can i distinguish if this came from the factory as a 38-55 or if this one is a fake?

I have it documented as most likely original, but without a hands on inspection, I cannot be 100% certain.

Scooter. I think you should make a run at it. In fact I’d being willing to help you with buying it, by buying that deluxe 86 ELW in 45-90 I lost to you a couple years ago. FWIW.

Bert-
For your survey I was at the Morphy auction and had this 64 in my hands it looks 100% correct to me and very nice with only some small corrosion on the lower tang. I was the underbidder and it brought $6500 plus the fees Wich are heavy!!
If it is indeed an authentic Model 64 38-55, it sold for a very good price!

I was an underbidder as well. On top of the BP, here in California, we pay an additional 11% tax, which supposedly goes into a fund to help those injured by firearms. I think for now, i will stick with the 1886’s. That was a nice 64, however, there are some nice 86’s coming up in some of the auctions.

And who in their right mind believes that’s where the money goes.

Eleven percent? Probably dedicated to the High Speed Rail to Nowhere project, or the “Hotel California Corporate Franchise Tax”: you can check out any time you want but you can never leave our tax base!
Chuck, is that why so many auctions are sited in Nevada?

Chuck and Zeb, The worst part is how IL tries to copy CA! Highway tax money disappeared into the general funds for years. So…an amendment to our constitution REQUIRES highway taxes go to the highway funds only. So…now there is suspicion the definition of highway funds may include some new ideas, as highway projects tend to ebb and flow with no regard to anything obvious other than largesse by our legislature and governor.
