Hi,
I have a Winchester pre 64 model 70 standard 24” in 270win with a Monte Carlo stock. It is missing the rear sight. It was made in 1953. Roger Rules book states in 1952 it would have a marble 69 rear sight and in 1955 a Lyman 16B. The book lists nothing for 1953. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Mjthomas1-
On a 1953 MC comb M70 standard rifle I would expect to see a Marbles 69. Looking my survey data, of the MC comb rifles observed that still had their original sights, nearly all 1953 serial number guns have the Marbles. That said, I’ve found a few with late 1953 serial numbers that have a (probably original) Lyman 16B. By 1954 and later they pretty much all have the Lyman. So the sight nobody would question on a 1953 gun would be the Marbles 69.
One thing to note is that the Marbles 69 as used on the M70 came in two heights, a “low” one used on standard barrels and a “high” one used on FWT barrels. Borrowing pictures from pre64win.com they’d look like this:
Hope this helps!!!
