  Thank you for this forum.

Light restoration to the circa 1972 Model 94 given to me by my Dad.
Inserting stock into upper and lower tang, I can’t get the long screw that I drop into upper tang to “start” into the threads of lower tang.  I’ve verified that the screws are galled, but when I insert stock, alignment seems fine because screw drops in freely; but frustrated trying to get that screw to “start.”  Any tricks?  Maybe a drift pin…?

Buy another screw or use a die to chase the threads.  If a standard thread a nut may chase the threads.

Or try VERY lightly tapering the bottom of that screw.

Are you sure the 2 tangs haven’t gotten slightly sprung apart? I would insert the stock and very carefully draw them together using a WOODEN clamp and try starting the screw.

Without the stock on, when you drop the screw in from the top, does it look to align correctly with bottom hole? I imagine it’s threads since you mention galling but any machinist or good old-school gunsmith can fix it if you don’t have the tools….or get a matching tap/thread chaser and try it yourself.

Don has a good point.  Any padded clamp will work.
