My 1894 (early 1900’s) has 2 very small cracks on the upper tang. They are approx. 1/2 long and start from the squared area at the opening just behind the hammer. I have looked at the cracks with the stock and hammer removed. The cracks have not spread from the surface. I have not shot the rifle but I just want the cracks to go away. Would like everybody’s thoughts and best way to repair. It would be nice if the repair could be made in Houston, Tx. I will post a picture as soon as photo bucket starts working.
The only way to make a crack go away is to have it welded. The side affect is that you will loose all finish in that area from heat and working weld down flush then it will need to be colored to match the rest of the gun. If you just want a shooter you could have it welded and just leave it as is, just cleaning up the edges so the stock or hammer fit. Most anybody that has a TIG welder can do it if they use the right rod but the expertise is needed if you wanted colored so it matches the rest of the gun.
