I believe you would be better off selling the rifle for what it is and purchase one that appeals to your eye. You will devalue the rifle from it’s intended original configuration. I believe a better option may be to get replacement wood.
If you are intent on altering the original stock, a complete refinish will be the only way to get it “right”. After the finish is removed lightly sand the “field” area’s of the stock to make a little fine sawdust. Mix that sawdust with any good carpenters glue and fill the tack holes with it. Proceed to refinish your stock.
Lots of work and loss of value for a little gain in personal preference……….

The tacks and other ornaments are somewhat “correct” for a commemorative honoring Crazy Horse. Not a big fan of commemoratives but a fan of Crazy Horse. I’d leave it alone or sell it. Commemoratives are often very high quality firearms but apparently if you shoot them they become “shooters” and little more.
GunNut you nailed it. I’m not a collector and the value of a commemorative like the CHH isn’t high anyway. I wan’t to shoot it. But I’m interested in Native Americans. I’m from Germany, five years ago I visited South Dakota, touring with a Lakota for a week. We went to the place where Crazy Horse was killed. Last year I went to Comanche country: Texas. I gonna ask a stock maker to remove a couple of tacks.
