I hope this is allowed to ask.

I was given a few rifles (that I got to choose) for assisting a widow with her late husbands estate sale, who was my Godfather.

This rifle is a Savage 99H in 22HP and no flaws except the butt plate wasn’t original (have one on back order via Ebay) and this nasty chunk chipped out of the walnut. This rifle is about 90% condition or better but that stock chip probably drags it to 60%.

Any type of fix I can do for this that doesn’t look crappy? Or just leave as is?]i-NtNCWQP-L.jpg[

Most any repair will be visible. The most common way to repair it is to sand it off so its perfectly flat and then you glue on another piece of wood with as close to the same grain as you can find trying to line up the grains. Then just shape it and finish it. Here is a Youtube video  of how you would do it.

Thank you!

I have another walnut stock but I don’t think the grains will match.

I think I’ll just send this new stock to a professional and let them match the wood. I do not want to replace the original stock though.
