Howdy forum,

I recently added a couple more winchesters to the collection one a really nice 1928 SRC model

and the other this 1898 Model 26″ barrel that has some issues.

Mainly its has 2 receivers screws that Bubba really buggered up and other screws seem pretty frozen.

Any suggestions on the best way that I might possible have some luck in removing the buggered up screws ?

I do have original screws that will replace them.  Also note the bubba job on the wood forend, not sure what he

was trying to accomplish there…..

Thanks for your time …

Gunny,

You have a model 1894 there, and the one screw is beyond removing with normal tools so your looking at drilling and using a easy out or drilling and retapping. It might be too small to use a easy out. Either way it is drilled undersize so you don’t take out the threads in the receiver.  If it were mine I would soak it up good with a penetrating oil for many days and then try drilling it with a left hand drill. The bad looking screw holds the carrier in place so its possible to remove the screw on the other side and drill this side out enough to remove the carrier then drill and retap it on the bench which will be a lot easier. If your not a handy mechanic familiar with removing twisted off studs or bolts you probably want to take it to a gunsmith.

The forearm wood can’t be helped so your looking at replacing it.

Thanks Bob for your insight appreciate it.  The wood I figure down the road I’d replace.

Im going to trying soaking it for a few days and see if possibly my easy out might work

but if not, as you mentioned Im going to look for a good gun smith .

BTW, I ran a check on the serial number, and it came back showing it as made in 1898 I forgot to add it that way  my bad …Embarassed
