I recently inherited my father’s old Winchester pump 22. It has some rust but not excessively bad except for the inside of the barrel itself. It is extremely pitted and cartridges will not eject properly. The ejector doesn’t appear to be worn, but the shells expand when fired and get stuck. I am wanting to get the barrel relined.
My primary question is however, were all 1906 models blued when the came off the production line? My gun shows no sign of blueing, and I wondered if they just had a silver gunmetal look when they were new?
I would like to try and restore it as nearly as possible to it’s new condition.
Can anyone comment?
Thanks,
Robb
Hello Robb,
The Model 1906 was blued unless specifically ordered with nickel plating. What you describe, is a blued rifle with typical wear & tear over its long lifetime.
Relining the barrel will fix the extraction problem. Refinishing it if done properly will certainly make it look better, but does not enhance the value at all.
